Sleep. Sleep Pretty.

Sleep. We spend the most precious of our everyday in deep sleep, where the problems of our every day lives leave us momentarily.  This jet-setting life of mine has led to many sleepless nights, whereby I find myself wide awake in the wee hours of the morning, thinking of absolute rubbish. I am begining to believe my body is now filled with toxic because research has shown that the time at which the human body detoxifies is actually between 11pm to 3am. Not only do I miss this detox period for my precious body, I find myself woken up at 9am in the morning by some sort of an imaginary creature which holds my eyelids open and crawls into my brain and runs circles in it. So this has been my lifestyle and sleep pattern for the past few weeks and I can tell you that is a horrible experience. I find myself putting on extra pounds (and, may i add, not in the most flattering of places), being rather irritable and just plain tired.

And contrary to what you may perceive, counting sheep doesn’t necessarily put you through a peaceful sleep. (I’ve tried it countless of times and I always drift off thinking about something related to sheeps and some faraway farm and what it would be like if I was born a farmer’s daughter). Well, research shows that combing your hair and wriggling your toes before sleep helps to improve blood circulation needed for a good night’s rest. But, I shall let you into a little secret of mine, sleeping pretty does it for me. Honestly, I just cannot fall asleep without having a nice warm bath, slattering myself with the richest of moisturers before slipping into bed with my pretty and luxurious Les Affaires sleepwear. Extremely random and it made my friends question my sudden decision to leave but honestly, it made many things so much clearer in my mind. The doubts that I have been having in relationships and questions I had about myself and what I want. Not only that, it left me so absolutely tired that I fall asleep promptly before 11pm. It was exhausting but nevertheless, rejuvenating. Funny how I just put two contradictory statements together.  Free your mind, and find what works best for you. I know I did.

Today I understand why the satorist became the satorist. I am in poverty-stricken Egypt and it is quite unlike how I imagined it. In my guidebook, all i see is the majestic pyramids, the sculptures cast in gold, the lakeside cafe at El Azhar. All architecturally beautiful. Yet, I am here now and it’s an eye-opener. The buildings are half-built with the foundations still there because they simply ran out of money to continue the construction. The top of buildings are filled with yesterday’s old clothes. Walking out of giza plaza, I see a handful of little boys begging for money and mothers with their children, asking for one us dollar. The guidebooks don’t tell you it’s like this.

And yet, I fell in love with the way these people dress. Nothing from the page of vogue yet timelessly chic. I see a man in a suit and tie, looking immaculately neat, despite the fact that his suit is probably close to 30 years old. It’s nothing expensive but it feels as though his personality shines through it. Here, everyone dresses in a way that seems to tell a story. The man in charge of the camels has the look of a shepherd.  There’s just so much emic influence that I simply cannot ignore. And I wish I could capture that moment in film. Compare this with Dubai, a rich and beautiful city with shopping centres that could match the size of Singapore. Yet, everyone dresses and looks the same. Worse still, in jeans and slippers..which is to me, the greatest faux pas.

Fashion that comes from within, doesn’t have to be expensive. Let us take this day to remember that fashion should complete your personality, instead of forming the whole of it. I will start with my innerwear today. Invest in classy and fabulous sleepwear that is uniquely you today. I know I definitely will.

Les Affaires Fashion Show 2010: Naughty & Nice

When it comes to fashion, somehow naughty and nice just doesn’t seem to fit, except for the fact that they both start with the letter ‘n’. Especially so when it comes to sleepwear. It looked almost as though we had tasked ourselves with the impossible when we set it as the theme of Les Affaires Fashion Show 2010.

But nevertheless, we must say, we succeeded. The lace veil mask that the models wore was a signature of this “naughty” theme. When ‘un-veiled,’ the niceness of the Vintage Trousseau collection was undeniable. Showcasing Vintage Trousseau, the fashion show played on the romance & sensuality of yester-year where courtship was slow and gradual, where beauty was alluring and mysteriouus.

Guests mingled in the Fashion Show pre-party, some decked in the same lacy veil mask that was included in the gift bags, at the chi-chi Ta Ke a Studio M hotel. It was a seductive tropical setting with an infinity pool. Everyone from the Les Affaires team was decked in Les Affaires latest collection. Guest who spotted them were reward with prizes fro TaKe & Chocolate Schubar. The show was not without a cause, we raised $500 for the Breast Cancer Foundation, by auctioning an exclusive one-off bridal piece.

Be Decadence. There is no such thing as over-decadence when it comes to pampering ourselves with the sweet surrender of lace, and softest of fabrics here at Les Affaires.

Lady Gaga says we should look nice all the time.

We are not hard-core fans of Lady Gaga but we love the way she pushes the boundaries of fashion. She’s self-indulgent and sometimes, we all deserve a little pampering (just don’t go overboard, dears!).

When I meet celebrities and they’re in casual clothes, I’m always like, ‘Whaaat?’ I don’t mean to be judgmental, but it would do them better to be who they really are, all the time. When I get out of a car and there are 30 fans waiting for me, I know I’m dressed the way I should be. There’s a reason they have that emotional reaction.’

You should too. You don’t have to dress the way she does, you just have to dress in what you think you look best in. Indulging on little splurges that you so deserve. I can’t wait to slip into my favourite sleepwear tonight as I sip a hot latte and read my book to sleeep.
